Petzl Pur’Line 6mm Tag Line – Great Balance Between Weight And Strength

A Tag Line is a thin hyperstatic cord usually trailed by the lead climber to pull a bag and also enable climbing on a single rope whilst still being able to do full length rappels.

You can read more about Tag Lines and how and why we might use them in our recent “Rope Systems” article.

I’ve used various tag lines over the years from basic 4mm cord to a skinny half rope, all of which have their pros and cons.

The Petzl Pur’Line 6mm tag line has been my regular tag this season.

It behaves itself relatively well for a skinny cord, but like any skinny cord or rope, it needs careful management, particularly in windy conditions.

For me what I like most about this compared to others I have used is the balance of low weight (20g/metre), strength (I’ve hauled multi-day bags and a portaledge on this), durability and as I said earlier, relative ease of handling for a skinny cord.

Light enough to not hinder the lead climber on harder pitches

Petzl say:

Ultra-lightweight and ultra-durable hyperstatic cord designed for climbers and mountaineers to haul packs and retrieve single certified ropes during rappels

Designed for climbers and alpinists, the PUR LINE 6 mm is an ultra-lightweight and ultra-durable cord for hauling a pack or retrieving a single rope during a rappel. It is hyperstatic and features a rough sheath for good grip and easy handling. It is available in two lengths: 65-meter and 200-meter rolls.”

I’ve solely used the 65m length and this work well for full length rappels. It’s 65m to compensate for the stretch of 60m dynamic climbing rope when the 2 are paired together, but unless you’re doing lots of rope stretching rappels, which I wouldn’t advise, then this isn’t too much of a consideration. I do like the extra length so I have plenty of spare lead out line, when releasing the haul bags though.

Pur’Line 6mm and Petzl Nano Traxion

On the subject of hauling, this works perfectly with Petzl’s Micro Traxion and Nano Traxion devices amongst others.

In short, this is my go-to tag lines for hauling day bags or enough gear for a 3-4 day wall mission. There are lighter and heavier tags on the market, both have pros and cons, but this is my favourite for most of my single rope climbing applications.

Price: 65m
