The “mid-layer” category is arguably the most crowded space in outdoor apparel. To stand out, a piece needs to offer more than just a cozy feel; it needs to manage moisture like a synthetic while retaining the thermal magic of wool. Enter the Artilect Quandary Peak Hoody.

By utilising 220GSM Nuyarn technology, Artilect claims to have solved the age-old trade-off between weight and warmth. We took a closer look at how this piece stacks up for year-round mountain use. The Quandary Peak Hoody is an A/SYS-2 garment, which means it is designed to be worn with a thinner A/SYS-1 base layer, either long or short sleeved. I have tested it with both as I have a t-shirt and 1/4 zip long sleeved A/SYS-1 tops. It’s proved a super warm combination.
Performance & Fabric Technology
The heart of the Quandary Peak is the Nuyarn fleece. Unlike traditional spinning methods that twist the life out of wool fibers, Nuyarn wraps merino around a high-performance nylon core. This allows the wool to maintain its natural loft. Also I really liked the brushed inner, this really added warmth to the jacket. Also, I seem to be particularly sensitive to wool, which I can find quite itchy when worn next to my skin. The Quandary Peak Hoody was no exception here and I found it worked best, for me, with a long sleeved base layer on. This is totally subjective and plenty of people will be fine with it. I just thought it was worth mentioning.
Warmth-to-Weight: The 220GSM (grams per square meter) weight punches well above its class. It feels significantly warmer than standard 200-weight fleeces without the added bulk.
Moisture Management: Artilect claims it dries 5x faster than conventional merino. In high-output scenarios—like a taxing approach to a winter crag—the wicking is noticeable. It moves sweat away from the skin before the “merino chill” can set in during a belay. It certainly has been fine and quick drying after washing. Also it dried our quickly when worn under a Gore-Tex jacket, taking about 10-15 minutes to feel dry and warm. This is down to the great brushed inner which really wicks the sweat out quickly.

Durability: Using 21-micron Australian merino reinforced with a nylon core, the fabric is built for the abrasions of rock and pack straps. Do note, however, that as a natural material Merino wool can and will bobble when worn with hiking packs, climbing harness and other areas of high wear. I have read reviews where this is mentioned and I would say that happens even with fleece. There are trade off with everything – you want natural materials than

Versatility: From Outer Layer to Mid-Layer
The Quandary Peak is designed for year-round utility. In the shoulder seasons, the natural odour resistance and wind-cutting loft make it a solid outer layer. When the temperature drops into “true winter” territory, the slim, athletic cut allows it to layer perfectly under a hardshell or a belay parka.
Field Note: The stretch and recovery on this piece are remarkable. Often, merino-heavy layers can “bag out” after a few days of movement, but the Nuyarn construction ensures the hoodie retains its shape even after repeated use.

The Verdict
The Artilect Quandary Peak Hoody is a sophisticated evolution of the technical fleece. It’s an ideal choice for the multi-sport athlete who needs a piece that can transition from a cool summer evening at the boulders to a mid-winter alpine mission. It’s tough, dries quickly, and—crucially—doesn’t smell like a gym bag after three days of wear. The Quandary Peak Hoody has plenty of premium finishing touches such as: flat lock seams throughout, zipped hand pockets and a zipped chest pocket, YKK zips, taped neck seam and discreet Artliect branding. I’ve been wearing it constantly all season from breezy hikes, sunny cragging and hanging out at the gym – all great uses for it.

Pros: Exceptional warmth for its weight.
