Dave takes another look at his favourite climbing helmet: the Black Diamond Half Dome.
Our durable, comfortable and supremely adjustable workhorse, the Half Dome is built for the relentless pursuit of all styles of climbing.
I looked at the re-vamped Black Diamond Half Dome climbing helmet back in June 2013 and concluded that it was a great value, all round climbing helmet that was suitable for all types of climbing. My view hasn’t changed and the 2015 version is still a five star helmet that has really stood the test of time.

The fit is excellent with or without a hat on and the profile is low enough so that a hood easily goes over it. The cradle adjuster dial is nice and big and easy to use with gloves on and the cradle is super easy to adjust.
I constantly wear a climbing helmet when working and often for all other recreational climbing except valley sport climbing. For work I exclusively wear the Black Diamond Half Dome because it’s so comfortable. I’ve worn it in all weathers including some hot days in Riglos recently and it hasn’t let me down.

The advantages of using a rigid ABS helmet against a more lightweight helmet is durability, this has meant that although the Half Dome gets a lot of wear and abuse I haven’t had to buy a new one. With polystyrene ones I would have to replace it every year as my helmets get banged about a bit when I’m teaching climbing and generally leading climbing activities.

So, two years later and I’m still recommending it. For the price it’s a great helmet and it will last you many seasons. Of course, it’s not the lightest helmet in the Black Diamond range but is probably the most versatile. A five star helmet!

Amazing! This is a very nice post. You know I also love climbing and want to help climbers in finding a good head protector that can make them safe in their journey. That is why I wrote an article about the best climbing helmets. Read it and see what fits for you.
