The Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge (Y3P) is a rite of passage for UK hikers. Encompassing Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough, this 24-mile route is a massive undertaking. To help you prepare, the CGR team—who have decades of experience guiding and racing this route—have distilled our top 10 expert tips for a safe and successful 2026 hike.
1. Master the Logistics: The Parking Battle
In 2026, parking is the single biggest hurdle for Y3P hikers.
- Horton-in-Ribblesdale: The main YDNP car park fills up almost instantly. However, there is now a large, dedicated overspill car park nearby. Use that rather than clogging narrow village lanes.
- Ribblehead & The Hill Inn: Be warned—parking here has become significantly more limited. If you plan to park at these locations, arrive extremely early or there is a large lay-by a few hundred metres further on towards Ribblehead (for the Hill Inn).
- The Golden Rule: Carpool whenever possible. Local enforcement is strict in 2026 to protect access for residents and emergency services.
2. Light is Right
Minimize your pack weight. You don’t need 10 hours of supplies; there are accessible stops at Ribblehead (tea van), Philpin Farm, and The Hill Inn. Although on a recent trip out we noticed the tea van wasn’t there but the ice cream was so maybe that has changed (it was early season).
- Target: A 15–20L pack or a modern running vest.
- Strategy: Carry ~1L per leg and refill. Water is heavy—don’t carry more than you need.

3. Footwear & Blister Care
We have never completed the walk in heavy boots. We recommend lightweight hiking shoes or trail running trainers for agility.
- Change is Good: Carry spare socks. Changing into a dry pair halfway through can be a psychological and physical game-changer.
- Hotspots: Treat “hotspots” with blister plasters the second you feel them. Waiting until the top of Whernside is too late.
4. Navigation: Don’t Trust the Crowd
The route is popular, but don’t blindly follow the person in front—they might be lost too!
- The Bog Trap: After Pen-y-Ghent, avoid the “shortcut” fork; it’s a notorious bog. Stick to the newer, drier path toward Hull Pot.
- Tech vs. Tradition: Phone signal is unreliable. Download offline maps, but carry a physical map and compass. Ingleborough is famous for “disappearing” in the mist.
5. Choose Your Season
- The Sweet Spot: September offers drier ground and manageable crowds.
- The Rush: May through August is “Charity Challenge” season. If you hike then, expect a very “social” experience and limited parking.
6. Use Walking Poles
Poles are highly underrated. Even if you don’t use them for the first 15 miles, your knees will thank you on the steep descent off Ingleborough. Look for folding carbon fibre poles that stow away easily.
7. Hydration Strategy
Hydrate on the move. Modern running-style vests allow you to drink from front-mounted flasks without stopping.
- Pro Tip: Use isotonic tablets to replace salts.
- Emergency: A lightweight filter (like a LifeStraw) allows you to use natural springs if you run dry, but only if you know where to find them and feel confident in drinking from them!
8. Fuelling for Performance
Eat “little and often.” Digestion takes energy, so don’t eat a massive meal mid-hike.
- The 30-Minute Rule: Set a timer to eat a small snack every half hour.
- Accessibility: If your food is in the bottom of your pack, you won’t eat it. Keep snacks in hip-belt or vest pockets.
9. Pacing & Timing
- The Target: Sub-12 hours is the classic goal, but sub-9 hours is the benchmark for fit hikers moving efficiently.
- The Reality: The 3 Peaks Cafe is closed, so traditional “clocking in” is a thing of the past. If you need to bail, keep taxi numbers (there is no Uber) for Settle or Ingleton saved—it can cost up to £50 for a lift back to your car.
10. Safety First: Knowledge is Lightweight
Carry a basic first aid kit (blister plasters, bandage, sunscreen, gaffer tape) and an emergency shelter and know how to use them. If a genuine accident happens, contact Mountain Rescue immediately. Remember: Knowledge is the only kit that weighs nothing.

Rab Force Hoody

The Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge is an exercise in endurance and exposure. For 2026, the Rab Force Hoody has become our team’s definitive base layer choice, and here is why:
Technical Comfort
The Y3P is famous for its microclimates; you can be shivering in the mist on Pen-y-Ghent and baking in the sun on the long slog to Whernside within two hours. The Force Hoody is built from Dryflo Solar fabric, which is exceptionally breathable and moisture-wicking. It moves sweat away from your skin instantly, preventing that “chilled” feeling when the wind picks up on the summits.
Intelligent Protection
- Sun Safety: With a UPF 40+ rating, it provides vital protection during the 8–12 hours of exposure on the hills.
- The Hood: The close-fitting, low-profile hood fits comfortably under a cap or helmet, offering a high collar to protect your neck without obstructing your vision.
- Odour Control: Treated with zinc-based odour control, it stays fresh even after 24 miles of high-intensity effort—your car mates will thank you on the drive home!
Hiking-Specific Design
Rab has engineered this with dropped shoulder seams and low-profile flatlock seams, specifically to prevent chafing under backpack straps or running vests.
Why it wins for the Y3P: weighing only 185g (Medium), it embodies the “Light is Right” philosophy. It’s a versatile piece that functions as a cooling single layer in the heat or a high-performance base layer under a shell if the Yorkshire weather turns.
The Rab Force Hoody comes in sizes S-XXL for men and sizes 08-16 for women. There are four colour options. The SRP is £55 and it can be purchased direct from Rab UK or specialist retailers.
Klättermusen Ansur Hooded Wind Jacket

When tackling a high-output endurance challenge like the Yorkshire 3 Peaks, your outer layer needs to balance protection with extreme breathability. The Klättermusen Ansur is the gold standard for “fast and light” hiking in 2026.
Natural Technical Prowess Unlike synthetic shells that can feel like a “plastic bag” during steep climbs, the Ansur is crafted from 100% organic Katla Cotton. This unique material uses heat and pressure to create a windproof, water-resistant fabric that remains incredibly breathable. It allows moisture to escape while blocking the biting Dales wind on the Whernside ridgeline.
Functional Excellence
- The “3D” Hood: Adjusts perfectly with a single pull, ensuring it moves with your head—essential for spotting path markers in the mist.
- Durability: Despite its light weight, the Ripstop construction handles limestone scrapes and overgrown trails with ease.
- Sustainability: Being fluorocarbon-free and organic, it’s as kind to the environment as it is to the hiker.
Why it wins for the 3 Peaks: at just 270g, it packs down to nothing in a running vest. The offset safety zipper prevents chin-rub, and the high-placed pockets stay accessible even when wearing a pack waist-belt. On top if that it’s packed full of premium features such as the internal thumb loops that double up as a cuff cinch, stiffened peak, reflective logos and the signature reflective triangle with mouse rivet. It’s the ultimate “just-in-case” layer that you’ll likely end up wearing all day.
The Klättermusen Ansur Hooded Wind Jacket comes in sizes XS-XXL and for colour options. The women’s version comes in sizes XXS – XL and five colour options.
The SRP is £260 and it can be bought from Klättermusen UK or the London store.
Arc’teryx Atom Vest

For the 2026 Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge, temperature regulation is your best friend. The updated and legendary Arc’teryx Atom Vest is the ultimate core-warmer for high-output days where a full jacket is overkill, but the North Yorkshire wind is biting. Combine this with a windproof or lightweight hardshell and you’ve got, pretty much, the perfect combination for most conditions bar winter.
What’s New for 2026?
The latest generation has been refined with 100% recycled Coreloft Compact 60 insulation. It provides the same legendary warmth-to-weight ratio but with improved loft retention, meaning it won’t “pack out” after being stuffed into your running vest or pack ten times a day. The face fabric has transitioned to a PFAS-free FC0 DWR finish, offering eco-conscious weather resistance against the inevitable drizzle.
Technical Highlights
- Tyono 20 Shell: This 20-denier fabric is surprisingly tough for its weight (approx. 195g) and offers just enough air permeability to prevent the “greenhouse effect” during the steep scramble up Pen-y-Ghent.
- Stretch Fleece Side Panels: These Octa Fleece panels are a game-changer for 2026, providing mechanical stretch for unrestricted movement while dumping excess heat.
- New Regular Fit: The 2026 model features a slightly lower collar and a more ergonomic cut, making it easier to layer over a base layer or under a shell when the clouds drop on Ingleborough.
Why it wins for the 3 Peaks: it’s the “Goldilocks” layer. It keeps your vital organs warm—essential for maintaining circulation to your legs—while allowing your arms to move freely and shed heat. It stows into its own internal chest pocket, taking up less space in your pack than a litre of water. It’s also super versatile and you’ll find yourself reaching for it time and again for all your adventures whether in nature or urban.
The Arc’teryx Atom Vest comes in sizes XS-XXL and four colour options for men and XXS-XXL and three colour options for women.
The SRP is £180 and it can be purchased direct from Arc’teryx UK
Scarpa Ribelle Run LT

For the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge, footwear choice is the difference between a successful sub-9-hour time and a painful slog. The Scarpa Ribelle Run LT is our team’s definitive choice for those who want to move fast across technical limestone and boggy moorland.
The Hybrid Powerhouse The Ribelle Run LT bridges the gap between a high-performance trail runner and a lightweight approach shoe. Built for “Light and Fast” mountain travel, it offers the precision needed for the rocky scramble up Pen-y-Ghent while maintaining the cushioning required for the long, flat valley floor miles toward Ribblehead.
Technical Highlights
- PRESA Outsole: The 2026 rubber compound is stickier than ever. It provides incredible traction on wet limestone—notoriously slippery on the Ingleborough descent—while the 4mm lugs offer plenty of “bite” in the Horton Moor mud.
- Sock-Fit LW Construction: A lightweight, integrated tongue and collar wrap the foot like a second skin, preventing debris and grit from entering the shoe over 24 miles.
- Low-Profile Protection: The TPU rand provides essential toe protection against rock strikes without the weight of a traditional hiking boot.
Why they win for the 3 Peaks: at approximately 280g (per shoe), it embodies our “Light is Right” philosophy. The EVA midsole provides just enough energy return to keep your legs fresh for the final climb, while the 4mm drop ensures stability on uneven, technical terrain.
The Scarpa Ribelle Run LT comes in sizes 40 – 48 for men and 37-42 for women.
The SRP is £135 and they can be bought direct from Scarpa UK.
Helly Hansen Move QD Shorts 6”

The long, varied stretches of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge require shorts that work as hard as you do. The Helly Hansen Move QD (Quick-Dry) Shorts have become our team’s top recommendation for hikers and fast-packers looking for a blend of technical performance and all-day comfort.
Technical Performance
When you’re moving between the heat of the Ribblehead valley and the wind-whipped summits, moisture management is critical. These shorts are constructed from a high-performance 4-way stretch fabric that offers total freedom of movement—essential for the high-step scrambles on Pen-y-Ghent. The “QD” stands for Quick-Dry, and the 2026 model lives up to the name, wicking sweat instantly and drying rapidly after a sudden Dales downpour or a splash through a bog.
Technical Highlights
- Bluesign Approved Fabric: A sustainable, lightweight construction that feels soft against the skin while remaining tough enough to handle limestone abrasions.
- Ergonomic Pockets: Featuring a secure zip-thigh pocket, these shorts keep your trail snacks or route card accessible without the “swing” often found in heavier cargo shorts.
- Integrated Versatility: The 2026 update features a refined, low-profile waistband that sits flat under a running vest or backpack hip-belt, eliminating friction and hotspots over a 24-mile day.
Why they win for the 3 Peaks: they are the ultimate “set and forget” gear. Lightweight, breathable, and incredibly durable, they provide the mobility of a running short with the ruggedness of a hiking garment. At a weight that’s barely noticeable, they fit perfectly into a high-cadence Y3P strategy. The casual style also means that you’ll look just as good in the pub celebrating a successful challenge.
The Helly Hansen Move QD Shorts 6″ are available in sizes S-2XL and five colour options.
The SRP is £65 and they can be purchased direct from Helly Hansen UK
Berghaus Fast Hike M15 Backpack

The “Light is Right” philosophy is best embodied by the Berghaus Fast Hike M15 Backpack. This isn’t just a backpack; it’s a high-performance hybrid that merges the storage of a day pack with the precision fit of a racing vest. We are big fans of this style of pack for endurance days.
The Hybrid Revolution
The standout feature for 2026 is the newly developed male-specific vest harness. Engineered specifically for the male anatomy, this harness wraps the torso to distribute weight evenly across the chest rather than just the shoulders. Combined with the updated version of the iconic Berghaus Limpet compression system, the pack remains completely bounce-free, even when you’re jogging the descents or moving fast over technical limestone pavement. There is also a women’s specific version, also engineered for the female anatomy.
Technical Highlights
- 15L Optimized Storage: Perfectly sized for the Y3P, with a weather-resistant cinch opening for rapid kit access.
- Accessibility on the Move: Features two chest strap mesh bottle pockets and a zipped expansion pocket, allowing you to hydrate and fuel without ever taking the pack off.
- Limpet Stability: The updated compression system delivers a high level of stability, ensuring the load stays centred during high-cadence movement.
- Trail Ready: Includes dedicated stash pockets for Z-poles and an external water-resistant pocket to protect your phone and route card from the Dales mist.
Why it wins for the 3 Peaks: with its 15L capacity, it forces you to be “ruthless” with your kit list while providing enough space for the essentials. Being hydration system compatible and featuring pole storage, it allows you to maintain a steady pace from Horton to Ingleborough with zero wasted energy.
The Berghaus Fast Hike M15 Backpack comes in one size and any colour you like as long as it’s Black.
The SRP is £120 and it can be purchased direct from Berghaus UK.
Leki Skysolo FX.One Carbon Poles

At CGR, we consider walking poles essential kit, not optional extras. For a 24-mile endurance challenge like the Yorkshire 3 Peaks, poles act as “four-wheel drive” for your body. They reduce the impact on your knees by up to 25% on steep descents like Whernside and provide much-needed propulsion during the final, grueling climb up Ingleborough. For 2026, the Leki Skysolo FX.One Carbon is the pinnacle of this technology with precision, German, engineering.
Ultralight Engineering
When you’re counting every gram, these poles are unbeatable. Constructed from high-modulus HRC carbon, the Skysolo FX.One is incredibly stiff for maximum power transfer while remaining featherlight. The “FX” denotes Leki’s new fixed-length folding system—with a single push of a button, the pole snaps into place or folds down into three compact sections that stash easily in a 15L pack. As we said, they are fixed length poles so you will need to be sure of your sizing.
Technical Highlights
- Nordic Shark Grip: This 2026 evolution of the Shark system offers a breathable, mesh strap that clicks in and out of the grip instantly. It provides a direct connection to the pole, allowing you to “push off” with an open hand to save grip strength.
- Fixed Length Precision: By removing adjustment levers, Leki has eliminated “vibration” and potential points of failure, making these the most stable folding poles on the market.
- Trail Running Tip: The concave tungsten carbide tip provides surgical precision on wet limestone and loose grit, ensuring you never lose your footing.
Why they win for the 3 Peaks: the Y3P is a test of attrition. By using the Skysolo FX.One Carbon, you’re offloading weight from your tired quads and calves onto your upper body. At the 20-mile mark, when your legs feel like lead, these poles become your greatest asset for maintaining a sub-9-hour pace.
The Leki Skysolo FX.One poles come in sizes 110cms to 125cms and one colour.
The SRP is £175.00 and they can be purchased from Leki UK.
Darn Tough Light Hiker Boot Socks

Your feet are your most critical asset. We cannot stress this enough: socks are just as important as your shoes. Friction and moisture are the primary causes of blisters; by carrying a spare pair, you can “reset” your feet at Ribblehead or Philpin Farm. Swapping into dry socks mid-hike removes salt buildup and dampness, preventing the skin from softening and breaking down over the 24-mile trek.
Technical Specifications
The Darn Tough Light Hiker Boot Sock is engineered for high-mileage durability.
- Performance Fit: A “no slip, no bunching” design ensures the sock stays put, eliminating the friction that can lead to hotspots.
- Material Blend: 42% Merino Wool, 53% Nylon, and 5% Lycra® Spandex. This high nylon content provides incredible longevity, while the Merino naturally wicks moisture and resists odours.
- True Seamless Toe: An undetectable seam prevents irritation across the toes during steep descents.
- Targeted Cushioning: Features soft terry loops underfoot and extra padding over the Achilles and ankle for protection against boot pressure.
Why they win for the 3 Peaks: they are unconditionally guaranteed for life. If you manage to wear a hole in them on the final slog off Ingleborough, Darn Tough will replace them! Lightweight and breathable with mesh panels, they are the gold standard for a sub-9-hour Y3P attempt.
The Darn Tough Light Hiker Boot Socks come is sizes M-XL for men and two colour choices. The women’s version comes in sizes S-L and one colour choice.
The SRP is £30 and they can be purchased from Darn Tough UK
LifeStraw Peak Series 3-in-1 Kit

On the Yorkshire 3 Peaks, water management is your literal lifeline. For supported hikers, it’s about carrying less weight between van stops; for unsupported attempts, it’s the difference between success and dropping out. Carrying 4L of water from the start adds a crushing 4kg to your back. The LifeStraw Peak Series 3-in-1 allows you to stay light by “filtering as you go” from the many springs you can find on the route.
Technical Versatility: the “3-in-1” naming refers to its incredible modularity. Use it as a standalone straw, attach it to a standard water bottle, or use it as a gravity system with the included squeeze bag.
- Extreme Filtration: Removes 99.999999% of bacteria (E. coli, Salmonella) and 99.999% of parasites and microplastics.
- Enhanced Flow: The 2026 re-engineered membrane handles the silt and sand of moorland streams without clogging, delivering a high flow rate when you’re parched.
- Durability: Made from premium, leak-proof materials, it’s designed to survive being stuffed into a crowded pack.
Why it Wins for the 3 Peaks: the shear versatility of this system will support any type of attempt; supported as a group or running for a PB. Also, as a Certified B Corp every purchase provides a child in need with safe water for a year. So it’s a win win all round.
The Lifestraw Peak Series 3 in 1 System costs 109.95 EUROS and is available from the Lifestraw EU website. It will be available from UK retailers later in the season.
