Review: The Klättermusen Vili Hooded Jacket 2026

In the world of high-alpine gear, it is rare to find a piece that occupies the niche of “ultra-light synthetic” with such purposeful intent. Klättermusen has long been the brand of choice for those who value unconventional design paired with uncompromising material science, and the Klättermusen Vili Hooded Jacket is a quintessential example of their philosophy. After putting this piece through its paces, it is clear that while it isn’t an “everything” jacket, it is a masterclass in targeted, high-output insulation.

Technical Construction and Materials

The first thing you notice about the Vili is its deceptive simplicity. Built from Klättermusen’s proprietary Oculus® fabric—a 100% post-consumer recycled polyester—the outer shell feels impressively robust for a garment designed to be this packable. The 20g G-Loft padding provides the core insulation, and the decision to use this specific synthetic weight tells you exactly who this jacket is for: the fast-and-light mountaineer, the dedicated trekker, or the climber who needs just enough protection against on those cooler days when a full scale parka would be overkill.

Super windy conditions, but after battling to get the Vili jacket on it worded really well.

The jacket is explicitly designed for high-output scenarios. At a warmth rating of 1/9 on the brand’s HCR (Heat Control Rating) scale, it’s not meant for static belaying in sub-zero temperatures. Instead, it thrives in the +10°C to -5°C range, where the goal is moisture management and wind-resistance during active movement. This means that the jacket is super light and compact and fits in smaller packs – perfect for those fast paced days or multi -pitch climbs. The MFR rating is 4/9 which offers decent wind proofing on breezy days – indeed performed really well on a recent windy summit day. Once I had battled to get it on (as I committed the rooky error of waiting until the summit ridge instead of putting it on just below) it performed perfectly.

Perfect for cooler, dry conditions. The fit allows for layering over another layer – or as a wear all day piece.

The Klättermusen Design Language

Klättermusen never settles for standard hardware, and the Vili is no exception. The hallmark slanted two-way zipper remains one of my favourite features in their entire lineup. By offsetting the zip, the jacket successfully avoids the dreaded “chin-bunching” when the jacket is fully sealed, and it significantly improves comfort when you’re layering under a shell. The storm placket behind the zip is subtle but effective, providing that crucial secondary defence against wind ingress. It works well with base layers in the range.

The hood is another point of praise. It’s fully adjustable, and like most of the brand’s technical layers, the cinching system feels intuitive even with gloves on. It provides a secure, ergonomic fit that moves with your head, preventing the “blind-spot” issues common in less refined hoods. Talking of gloves the wrist closure is brilliant, much better than a standard hook and loop set up or elasticated cuff. You can really tell Klättermusen have thought this through  – the wrist can be cinched very easily via the elasticated cord and clamp, so once you have cinched the cord the sleeve closes just above the wrist so serves it’s purpose of trapping heat in but allows for easy deployment of gloves as you don’t have to keep undoing straps and reclining every time you want to take gloves off – genius!

The sleeve cinch is a great idea, as you can see it’s super easy to get gloves on and off without the faff of velcro straps.

Performance and Utility

In the field, the Vili excels in its weight-to-performance ratio. It packs down into its own internal stowaway pocket (right hand pocket), making it an effortless addition to a mountain pack. During high-exertion sections of a hike, the breathability of the G-Loft insulation is noticeable—it doesn’t suffer from the “clammy” sensation that can plague heavier, less breathable synthetic layers.

However, it is important to temper expectations regarding its intended environment. This is not a heavy-duty expedition layer. The wind resistance is fair, and the water-repellent coating is sufficient for light mist or brief showers, but it is a performance piece. It wants to be moving. If you stand still for too long in a biting wind, you will eventually feel the thermal limits of the 20g fill.

Final Thoughts

The Vili is a focused tool. It’s for the user who understands that the lightest gear is the gear you actually wear. It avoids the bulk of traditional mid-layers while providing more protection than a standard fleece. For those seeking a reliable, sustainable, and highly packable “just in case” or “active use” layer, the Vili is an exceptional piece of engineering. It fits, it functions, and it does so with that signature Scandinavian minimalist grit. It has all the premium features that make Klättermusen a premium brand: discreet, embroidered logs, aluminium finished zip tags, reflective patches on the front and back (still discreet), superb and sustainable manufacture and materials.

However, it does miss a zipped chest pocket, so crucial for phones these days – but hey, I suspect Klättermusen’s philosophy would say… why would you need your phone, just immerse yourself in the activity! The jacket does have two, internal loops, for clipping gloves to however so you can secure gloves if you need to. I’ve dropped a star for that but if it isn’t an issue for you then the jacket is a five star purchase. Also, the colour options (apart from Black) are more muted, which is usual for Scandi brands, for instance the Mercury Blue I tested has more of a green tinge to it than blue.

The Klättermusen Vili Hooded Jacket comes in sizes XS-XXL for men and 4 colour options. For women sizes are XXS – XL and for colour options.

The SRP is £250 and it can be purchased through Klättermusen UK or the London store.
