The Ultimate Hybrid Crossover Boots for Fast-Paced Adventures

In the niche world of technical footwear, finding a boot that doesn’t compromise between the “runability” of a trail shoe and the “security” of a mountaineering boot is the holy grail. After putting the new Scarpa Ribelle Cross 2 Mid GTX through its paces across a spectrum of technical terrain—from greasy UK limestone to late-season snow patches—it’s clear that Scarpa has refined the hybrid category to a sharp edge.
Technical Precision and “Feel”
As climbers, we look for sensitivity. Most mid-height boots feel like clunky buckets when the terrain tips past 45 degrees, but the Ribelle Cross 2 Mid is different. Built on a more athletic last than your standard trekker, the precision through the toe box is exceptional. During several technical approaches, I found the climbing ability of the Presa HIK outsole provided surprising edging capability on moderate scrambles. As well as enough stiffness to provide security when the ground got technical. The 10mm drop also helps as it reduces the strain on tired calf muscles, gives a cushioned heel strike and reduces the dreaded heel lift on steep accents.

The Stability Wrap construction is the secret sauce here. By extending the upper material down into the midsole, Scarpa has created a low, centre of gravity feel. It reduces the “leverage” that high-stack boots usually exert on your ankles, giving you more confidence when moving fast over uneven terrain. The DST chasis has proven ability from the Rush range to give secure footing over loose scree and those rocky lanes you often find at the end of a hike in The Lakes or Yorkshire Dales.
Tested: From Scree to Snow
While marketed as a breathable walking boot, I pushed these into genuine 3-season technical environments. On a recent outing involving steep, snow slopes, the boots held their own remarkably well for a non-crampon-rated model. While you won’t be front-pointing in these, the aggressive lug geometry provided reliable traction on ascents and descents. Although I haven’t worn these with crampons (I’m probably unlikely to be wearing these on steep, icy terrain) I have tried them with my Grivel spikes and they worked brilliantly, so I’d be confident using the Ribelle Cross 2 Mid’s for glacier approaches to alpine rock or Scottish ‘spring’ conditions such as the snowy ridge traverses with no icy pitches.

The GORE-TEX ePE membrane (the new sustainable, PFAS-free standard) was put to the test during several stream crossings and slushy descents. My feet remained bone-dry, and the breathability was a noticeable step up from older PTFE-based membranes—essential for those high-output “redline” approaches where moisture management is as important as grip.
Durability and the One-Layer Upper
The “One-Layer” upper mesh, reinforced with TPU film, initially looked too thin for serious scree-bashing. However, after 50+ miles of abrasion against abrasive rock, the sidewalls show zero signs of delamination or fraying. The 3D Autofit Collar also deserves a shout-out; it keeps out grit and snow spindrift without creating the dreaded pressure point on the Achilles during steep climbs.
The Verdict: A New Standard for Fast & Light
The Scarpa Ribelle Cross 2 Mid GTX is the definitive choice for the “Fast and Light” specialist. If your adventures sit in the intersection of mountain running, technical scrambling, and light mountaineering, this is the most versatile tool in the shed. There are plenty of quality finishing touches, as you would expect from Scarpa. Heel and tongue tabs for easy on/off, bar tacking on the lace webbing, tonal laces and colour scheme and discreet logos all in a great looking boot.

Pro Tip: Size these as you would your approach shoes rather than your heavy boots to maintain that crucial “feel” on technical rock.
The Scarpa Ribelle Cross 2 Mid GTX comes in sizes EUR 41-47 and two colour options. There is also a women’s specific version that comes in sizes 37-42 and two colour options. There is also a non Gore-Tex version and shoe versions so plenty of choice.
The SRP is £175 and they are available from Scarpa UK and specialist retailers.
